Donatello Proof 2 Euro Available


Proof 2 Euro coins commemorating the 550th anniversary of the death of Florentine artist Donatello are now available from the Italian Mint.

Donatello's David was used as inspiration for the coin design

The coin is of the same design as the 2016 Italian circulation 2 Euro coin. The obverse bears the right facing bust of Donatello's David, a bronze sculpture currently housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. To the left is the “RI” symbol identifying the coin from the Italian Republic. Just below that are the dates “1465” and “2016” signifying the 550th anniversary of Donatello's death. With the Name Donatello appearing just below the bust, all surrounded by 12 five pointed stars.

The reverse bears the standard design of all 2 Euro coins issued across Europe.

 

While a reported 1 500 000 coins are planned for general circulation. The proof version of the coin will be limited to a mintage of only 6000 coins.
