The New Zealand Mint has now released the third coin in their ongoing Star Wars Ships series. Having previously released the Millennium Falcon and Star Destroyer coins, this latest coin in the collection is dedicated to the venerable T-65 X-Wing Fighter.

The X-Wing is one of the most beloved and versatile ships in the Rebel Alliance and New Republic armadas. So much so that it became a symbol for the resistance. Pilots appreciate the X-Wing's nimble nature with responsive controls, powerful and durable engines paired with four laser canons and a compliment of proton torpedos.
In addition it also has a docking socket for an R2 astromech droid, capable of performing hyperspace calculations and making emergency repairs if needed. The droid could also pilot the craft independently of the pilot, should the need arise. Another advantage that the X-Wings had over the standard imperial TIE-Fighters was the inclusion of a deflector shield generator, making it capable of withstanding a great deal of punishment in a dog fight.

The most notable encounter with a X-Wing Fighter was surely when Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star while piloting one.
In line with the series aesthetic the reverse of the Star Wars Ships : T-65 X-Wing Fighter coin features a top down blueprint design of the exterior of the titular ship. There are text elements highlighting the “LASER CANON”, “THRUST ENGINES” and “COCKPIT”. The ship's name appears to the bottom in two lines. The words “1 oz 999 Fine Silver” and “© & ™ Lucasfilm Ltd.” are inscribed in fine text along the upper left rim of the coin.

The obverse is the common series design featuring the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II, encircled by the usual mandatory designations. “ELIZABETH II”, “NIUE”, “TWO DOLLARS” and “2017” appear in a clockwise direction along the rim.
The coin is struck from 1oz of pure .999 Fineness silver and measures 40mm(1.5748 inch) in diameter. Issued under the authority of the island nation of Niue, the Star Wars Ships : T-65 X-Wing coin has a maximum mintage of 10 000 coins.

Shipped in a matte black Star Wars Branded display box, with accompanying certificate of authenticity. The coin is available to order directly from the New Zealand Mint website for US$80.00 each. Alternatively it should be obtainable via most reputable world coin dealers.
