The Royal Canadian Mint has released it’s first numismatic catalogue of what is set to be a historic year in 2017, where Canadians will celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.
First off we have two sets with the 2017 classic Canadian coin set leading the charge. The six coin set features Canada’s iconic coin designs but with a new 2017 date. These coins will not be available in circulation, as the circulation coins for 2017 will have special designs relateting to the 150th anniversary celebrations. The set has a maximum mintage of 75 000. The set is available for CAD$24.95 each.
The second set for the year is the traditional Canadian Specimen coin set. This six coin set is largely the same as the classic coin set but features coins of a proof-like finish, instead of the uncirculated coins. The specimen set also features a unique dollar coin depicting the Canadian Snow Goose on the reverse design, instead of the common Loon. This set will have a maximum mintage of 30 000 units and is selling for CAD$51.95 each.
Now we get to the good stuff with the first of the silver collector’s coins. First up is the pure silver $10 Maple Leaves coin. Struck from ½ an oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin has a mintage of 35 000 coins. This coin forms part of the 150th anniversary and pays homage to Canada’s beloved classic penny coin design. The coin is available for CAD$29.95.
Next is the 2017 Special Edition Proof Silver Dollar – entitled : Our Home and Native Land. This coin features the official Canada 150 logo, along with a map of Canada and the national flag. The silver dollar coins are always popular with collectors and at a mintage of only 20 000 coins it is sure to sell out at the mint in no time. CAD$59.95 will secure you one if you can get it in time.
The second coin in the zodiac series has also been made available. The second entry for this relatively new series features the sign of Aquarius. The pure silver $3 coin is embellished with two Swarovski® crystals. One clear crystal that points to Aquarius at the top of the coin and one violet crystal at the centre of the coin. A mintage of 5 500 coins have been struck and they are released for CAD$54.95 each.
The 1 oz. Pure Silver Gold Plated – Timeless Icons Piedfort coin is really something special. This double thick Piedfort strike has selective gold plating on the rim and the maple leaf on the reverse side of the design. The coin has a limited mintage of 7000 and looks absolutely fantastic. CAD$129.95 will secure you one from the mint and is sure to be a great talking point in any collection
The 1 oz. Pure Silver $20 Coin in the Nature’s Impressions series features the arctic Polar Bear. In addition to the lovely reverse design, the coin features polar bear paw prints all along the rim of the coin. A wonderful little touch that makes the coin stand out from the crowd of wildlife themed coins a little bit. The second coin in it’s series, it carries a mintage of 7 500 coins and is selling for CAD$102.95 each.
The next coin introduces a new series of three planned coins that will only be available through the Mint’s subscription program. The new Aircraft of The Second World War series. It features three partially colourized coins housed in a rather unique metal display case. The first coin released in January is the Hawker Hurricane coin with the other two set for release in February and March. The coins are priced at CAD$102.95 each and have a mintage figure of 7500 sets.
Then we have another series, again exclusive to the subscription program. A new 2oz pure silver glow in the dark 4 coin series called “Animals in the Moonlight”. The coins are selectively treated with a glow in the dark finish, and feature moonlit nature scenes. The first of these colourized coins feature the cougar. The rest of the series is set to feature the Lynx, Orcas and the Great Horned Owl and is scheduled to ship by April, August and October respectively. The coin has a low mintage of only 4000 and a order limit of only one per household. At CAD$189.95 per coin they are already sold out at the mint so collectors will have to look elsewhere to obtain these.
Then we have the mint’s 2017 baby gift “Welcome to the World” Coin. The perfect gift to celebrate the birth of a new baby a special way. This year for the first time these coins will be available in both silver and gold variants. The silver coin has a mintage of 25 000 coins while the gold coin will be limited to only 1500. The gold coin is a bit pricey at almost a CAD$1199.95 as opposed to CAD$59.95 for the silver coin, but then if you have the cash – why not?
The next coin is meant to celebrate the Chinese spring festival, better known as the Chinese New Year. It is the 2017 Pure Silver Lion Dance Coin. The coin is denominated as a lucky $8, with a mintage of 30 000 coins and will be available only in a matte proof finish for CAD$29.95 each.
Then the final coin to round out this months releases is the 2017 Best Wishes On Your Wedding Day – 1 oz. Pure Silver Coin with Rose Gold Plating. Another coin intended as a gift or as a means to celebrate a special occasion or event. I have to admit that this will make a really lovely wedding present, especially if the bride or groom is a coin collector. The 1oz silver coin has selective pink gold cladding to the rim, the hearts on the reverse and the queens bust on the obverse. With a total mintage of 10 000 coins they are selling at CAD$112.95 each.
All of the coins can be ordered directly from the Royal Canadian Mint, providing they aren’t sold out, alternatively you can contact your trusted international coin dealer for assistance.
More detailed reviews of some of these coins are likely to follow throughout the month, check back at the World Numismatic News for more.
