The US Mint have now officially released the fourth instalment for the America the Beautiful coin program for 2017, with the release of the Ellis Island coin rolls and bags.
The America the Beautiful quarter dollar coin program is an eleven year program that was originally launched in 2010 and is set to run until 2021, releasing five new coin designs each year honouring America's national parks and monuments.
Ellis Island, perhaps together with the Statue of Liberty, has become synonymous with American history and the American Dream. For more than sixty years, from 1892 to 1954, the site acted as a way station and entry point into the United States for more than 12 million immigrants to the USA.
The Ellis Island coin is the 39th coin to be released for the program overall, and the fourth of five coins set to be issued during 2017. The year has already seen the release of the Effigy Mounds National Monument, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site and Ozark National Scenic Riverways quarter dollar coins so far.
The reverse of the Ellis Island coin was designed by US Mint Artistic Infusion Program designer Barbara Fox and engraved by sculptor-engraver Phebe Hemphill. The design features a young immigrant family approaching Ellis Island, with the young boy holding an American flag. The hospital building of the complex is seen in the background. The words “ELLIS ISLAND”, “NEW JERSEY”, “2017” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are engraved along the border of the coin.
The obverse features the standard series design of the updated 1932 John Fanagan portrait of George Washington, along with the inscriptions of : “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “QUARTER DOLLAR”, “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. The mint mark appears just to the right of Washington's pony tail.
The coin has been made available by the US Mint to order in 40 coin rolls and 100 coin bags for all of the three available mint marks.
The 100 coin bags can be ordered at a cost of $34.95 per bag, containing either “P”, “D” or “S” mintmatked coins exclusively.
The San Francisco minted coins bearing the “S” mint mark are also available to order in individual 40 coin rolls. While the Philadelphia and Denver minted coins bearing the “P” and “D” mint marks can be obtained in a two roll set, which consists of a 40 coin roll of each at a price of $32.95 per set.
Then finally there is the special three roll set that one roll of 40 coins for each of the three mints. This three roll set is being offered by the Mint at a cost of $46.95 per set.
It should be noted that while the “P” and “D” coins will make their way into circulation, the coins with the “S” mint mark are being produced strictly as a numismatic product by the mint and will not be released for general circulation.
The coin rolls will have a special US Mint wrapping that display the names : “Ellis Island”, “NJ” for New Jersey and “$10” for the face value of the coins.
The coins can be ordered directly from the US Mint website
