Spain is celebrating it's participation at the 2016 Summer Olympics with a pair of commemorative collectors coins.
The first coin is a silver €10 coin of .925 Fineness(sterling silver), measuring 40mm and tipping the scales at 27gram. The reverse design features ancient Greek athletes involved in several different sports disciplines. The shield of the Spanish Olympic committee appearing colourized at the center of the coin. The mint mark appears immediately below the shield framed by a laurel wreath. The words”10 EURO” and “EQUIPO OLIMPICO ESPANOL”(SPANISH OLYMPIC TEAM ).
The two coins share the obverse design of the left facing portrait of King Felipe VI.
The second coin is a gold €100 coin of .999 Fineness measuring 23mm and weighing in at 6.75grams. The reverse design of the gold 100 Euro coin depicts two ancient Greek athletes running. The front man carrying the Olympic torch and the second a shield.
The mintmark and the colourized Spanish Olympic committee's emblem flanking them on either side. The legend on this coin reads ”100 EURO” to the bottom and “EQUIPO OLIMPICO ESPANOL”(SPANISH OLYMPIC TEAM ) at the top. Seven five pointed stars appears along the rim at the bottom.
Mintage for these coins will be limited to 7500 for the silver €10 coin and 2500 units for the gold €100 coin. The coins are issued capsuled in blue display boxes and are available separately at €375.00 for the gold coin and at €45.00 for the silver. Alternatively the two coins can be obtained as a set for €420.00 in a single display box.
The 2016 Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the XXXI Olympiad will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. Rio 2016 will be the fist Summer Olympics to be hosted in South America, and the fist to be held in a Portuguese speaking country. Interestingly enough it is also the first Olympic games to be held in the host countries official winter season.
The coins can be obtained at this stage from the Spanish Royal Mint(FNMT - Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre).
