The New Zealand Mint has been an a tear this past week with it's fourth coin release in as many days. Today the Kings of the Continents series gets it's third release with the King Cobra 1oz silver coin.
The Kings of the Continents numismatic coin series portrays the most dominant and revered animals of each continent. The previous two releases in the series were the African Lion and the Grey Wolf. Today's release is the first coin in the series from Southeast Asia, depicting the King Cobra.
The crown sized colorized 1 oz proof coin is struck from .999 Fine silver and has a limited mintage of 5000 units. The impactful milled edge coin is issued by the New Zealand mint on behalf of the island nation of Niue, where it has a face value of $2 as legal tender.
The coin is encased in an beautifully printed slide open box where the coin is held snug in a black velvet interior.
The collectors coin is listed for sale at the time of release for US$80.00.
The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is named after the 11 large scales on its head, resembling a King’s crown and can grow up to 7.3m (24 feet) long. This awe-inspiring snake is found in Asia; India, southeastern China, the Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, and the Philippine Islands. This high impact 1 oz coin shows venomous King Cobra rearing up to strike its prey against a remote wilderness backdrop.
