In old Norse mythology Hel was the Goddess of the dead and of the underworld, who had dominion over the realms of the dead. She held dominion over the souls of those who died of sickness and all those who did not die in battle. Those who died of natural causes were guided through the cycle of rebirth, while she would banish the evil dead to an ice realm for eternity.

In the Prose Edda she is noted as being the daughter of the God Loki, as such she would be a sibling to Loki's other children. Fenrir the wolf and Jormungand the world serpent.

The reverse of the coin depicts Hel at it's centre as a rather ghoulish figure with exposed skelecature and an unwelcoming expression. She is seated at the base of the first world tree with the dragon Nidhug wrapped around the tree behind her. The roots of the tree are comprised of the lost souls over which she holds dominion. The word “HEL” and the “P” mint mark of the Perth mint appear to the right of the coin.

The obverse of the coin has the same design as is shared by the rest of the series, depicting the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II within a circle. The obverse legend reads : “QUEEN ELIZABETH II”, “2 oz 9999 SILVER”, “2017”, “TUVALU” and “2 DOLLARS”.

Again, like the previous coins in the series this coin is struck from 2 oz of pure .9999 Fineness silver. The high relief, rimless design is further accentuated by a the coin's antique finish. Measuring 40.6 mm(1.598 inch) in diameter and 6mm(0.236 inch) thick, the coin has a maximum mintage of only 2000 pieces.
