US Mint Releases 2017 Proof Silver Eagles

The US Mint is now accepting orders for the 2017 proof American Eagle One Ounce Silver Dollar coins.

Much the same as the Gold Eagle coins, in terms of design, these coins are identical to their regular bullion counterparts – apart from the application of a brilliant proof finish.

The obverse of this coin features the Adolph A. Weinman designed full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, moving towards the left of the coin. She is enveloped in folds of the flag, which is draped across her shoulders while seemingly being windswept from the right of the design. Her right hand is extended in front of her and branches of laurel and oak fill her left hand. A dawning sun appears just above the horizon in front of Lady Liberty. The obverse legend reads : “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2017”.

The reverse of the coin features former Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti's classical heraldic eagle design with a shield across the eagle's breast, an olive branch in the right talon and a bundle of arrows in the left. A scroll that reads “E PLURIBUS” and “UNUM” is draped in it's beak. Thirteen stars, forming a triangle, are located just above the eagle's head. The “W” mintmark for the West Point Mint is engraved just below the left talon. This design is encircled by the reverse legend, which appears along the rim and reads : “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “1OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR”.

Each of the proof American Eagle One Ounce Silver coins is shipped in a US Mint branded blue velvet, satin–lined presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. The coins are stuck from 1oz of pure .999 Fineness silver each. Measuring 40.6mm(1.598 inches) in diameter, there is no official mintage limit on these coins. The final mintage figure will be determined by market demand, and as such no household order limit is imposed either.

Historically speaking the final mintage figures for these coins have hovered around the 800 000 mark for most of the last decade, so it would be relatively safe to assume that the final mintage will come to rest around the 700 000 to 900 000 mark by the end of the year. The coin can be ordered directly from the US Mint website for $53.95 each upon launch. The US Mint is now accepting orders for the 2017 proof American Eagle One Ounce Silver Dollar coins.
