US Mint Releases 2017 Gold Eagles

The United States Mint has now released the first official American gold numismatic products for 2017. The 2017 American Eagle Gold Proof Coins and four coin set.

The US Mint have been issuing American Eagle Gold coins every year since 1986. With the exception of some very minor details the design of these coins have remained largely unchanged in the three decades since. The coins are struck from crown gold, which is to say 22ct gold, consisting of 91.67% Gold tempered with 3% Silver and the balance being comprised of Copper. This alloy, while still mostly gold, makes the coin more durable and less prone to damage and wear.

The reverse of these coins was designed by sculptor Miley Busiek, and features a nesting family of eagles. A male eagle, with wings spread, flying over a nest that holds an awaiting female eagle and two eaglets. The larger male eagle is carrying an olive branch in his outstretched talons. The legend reads : “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”. The denomination and gold content is described to the bottom , along the rim.

“1 OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 50 DOLLARS” appear on the 1oz coin, changing for each of the four coins to reflect it's weight. The 1/2oz coin is denominated as $25, the 1/4oz coin becomes $10 and finally the smallest of the four – the 1/4oz has a $5 legal tender value. Naturally this is purely academic as the actual gold content of the coins far supercedes the marked denominations in reality.

The obverse is an adaptation of the renowned Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle $20 coin, which was originally issued in the US between 1907 and 1933. Named for its designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking towards the viewer. Her flowing hair swept by the wind, she is holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. An oak branch lies at her feet and the Capitol Building can be seen in the distant background. An ornate border of stars frames the scene with rays of light emanating from the horizon behind Liberty. The word “LIBERTY” appears to the top and the date, “2017”, to the lower right.
