The New Zealand Mint continues it's Classic Star Wars series with the first new coins in the series for 2017. This time it is the turn of Luke Skywalker to be sculpted in both silver and gold for this, the seventh instalment in the Star Wars Classic coin collection.
Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker was a simple farm boy on the arid world of Tatooine when the Star Wars films begin. Throughout the franchise we see him rise from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known. He joins the Rebel Alliance where he would discover secrets to his own past and fight against the evil forces of the Empire.
The reverse of this coin depicts a young Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, standing next to his X-34 landspeeder on the planet Tatooine. This classic image is taken from the first movie which was released in 1977 , and then later renamed to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope after the three prequels were released. The only text on the reverse appears in very small lettering along the left rim and reads : β1oz 999 Fine Silverβ and βΒ© & β’ Lucasfilm Ltd.β
The obverse of the coin is the ordinary obverse design for New Zealand Mint coins and features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse legend describes the ruler, country of Issue, denomination and date. It appears along the rim in a clockwise direction and reads : βELIZABETH IIβ, βNIUEβ, βTWO DOLLARSβ and β2017β.
The design is shared across all three variants of this design and only the denomination changes for each coin. Previous coins in this series have included depictions of Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Yoda, Han Solo and R2-D2 as well as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Most of these coins were issued throughout 2016 and are largely sold out at the mint, at the time of writing this review.
The 1oz Silver coin is struck from pure .999 Fineness silver to a 40mm(1.575 inch) coin. All three coins are only available in a proof finish and the silver coin has a mintage of 10 000 coins. It comes issued inside a special themed black and grey display case and is available from the Mint for US$85.00 each.
The next coin is a ΒΌ oz gold coin, with a denomination of 25 dollars. This coin measures 22mm (0.866 inch) and is struck from pure .9999 Fineness gold. The 1/4oz gold coin has a limited mintage of 1000 coins and is being sold for US$600 each.
Then finally the trio of coins is concluded with the pure gold 1oz proof coin. This 32mm (1.26 inch) coin has a limited mintage of 500 coins and is also struck from .9999 Fineness gold. Both coins are shipped in a Star Wars branded and stylised inner coin case and themed outer vanity cover. New Zealand Mint is asking US$2500.00 each for the 1oz gold Skywalker coins. All coins also come with a certificate of authenticity included in the packaging.
The coin strikes a dramatic note with the reverse design and will certainly make a welcome addition to most Star Wars collections, especially of you already own some of the other coins in this series.
