World’s 1st Legal Tender Donald Trump Coins

Well the Presidential dollar series may have come to a close in 2016, but that doesn't mean that you have no hope of seeing America's 45th president on a coin any time soon. The world's first legal tender commemorative coins featuring Donald Trump have now been issued by the central African county of Equatorial Guinea.

On the 20th of January 2017 Donald J Trump was officially sworn in as the 45th president of the United States of America. The results came as a surprise to many as the mainstream media and most political pundits widely predicted that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, would take the oval office. After the final results were announced Donald Trump had won by 306 electoral votes to only 232 for Hillary Clinton.

In order to commemorate this the Republic of Equatorial Guinea has authorised the release of two legal tender collectors coins. The two coins share a common design with the reverse depicting an effigy of Donald Trump gleaming with pride, as the windswept American flags waves in the background. The legend is inscribed along the rim and reads “45th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” along the top, with “TRUMP 2017” along the bottom. Two five-pointed stars divide the top and bottom legend at either end.

The first coin is a 1oz pure .999 Fineness silver coin, with a mintage of 5000 coins struck. The coin is denominated as 1000 Francs CFA. This 1oz coin measures an impressive 65mm(2.559 inch) and was minted by the German B.H. Mayer Mint using the Coin Investment Trust's(CIT) Smartminting technology.

Smartminting was first unveiled by CIT last year, and is a new minting process that allows for either sharper detail to be struck on thinner planchets, or for amazingly high reliefs to be achieved on normal thickness coins. Similarly Big Gold Minting(BGM) allows for the same process to be applied to gold coins, as it was here to the second coin which is a 5000 Francos CFA. This 1oz gold coin measures an astounding 65mm(2.559 inch) and is struck from 1oz of pure .9999 Fineness gold, using the CIT's BGM technology. This gold coin has a limited worldwide mintage of only 500 coins.

The obverse of the coin depicts an elephant walking atop a frosted globe that contains the national coat of arms of Equatorial Guinea with the motto “UNIDAD, PAZ, JUSTICIA”(unity, peace and justice). The denomination is listed to the bottom, along the rim, while the country of issue “REPULICA DE GUINEA ECUATORIAL” is inscribed to the top.

Both coins are issued in an interesting upright acrylic display case with a black rim, that allows the coin to be displayed almost anywhere. Both coins are minted to a brilliant proof finish. Now I have to say that from a technical perspective, to see such a large gold coin struck from only 1oz of gold, to have such sharp and crisp detail to the strike is truly an impressive feat. It is very exiting to think of the coins that can be produced using Smartminting and BGM in the future.

At the moment the Gold coin is selling for just around US$2 995.00 while the silver coin is priced at US$99.95 each. It should be noted that the Mayer mint doesn't accept orders

directly from the public so you will have to contact a coin dealer if you are interested in either of these coins. As I am writing this the coins have barely been released and the only place that I could find them listed was Modern Coin Mart. But as I have said they are brand new and I suspect that other large dealers should get them in stock soon.

Looking at the coin though I found myself wondering if it was designed from scratch after the election was over, or if they had two sets of designs ready to roll – so to speak. One featuring Clinton and this one featuring Trump.
