The Frozen - Magic of the Northern Lights silver coin collection continues with the second of five planned coins from the New Zealand Mint. The latest installment in the series is the Princess Anna coin.
This follows the release of the Elsa coin, which was also the launch coin for the series, a month earlier. The 'Frozen - Magic of the Northern Lights' collection features characters from the Disney's wildly popular 2013 animated adventure film Frozen.
Anna, or the Princess Anna of Arendelle should you prefer her full title, is the main protagonist from Frozen, and is the younger sister of Elsa, the Snow Queen. She is not your stereotypical princess though, considered more daring than graceful she often acts impulsively and dives head-first into situations. Despite her lack of forethought she is an extremely caring individual with a large sympathetic heart and an infectious optimism. More than anything Anna wishes to re-connect with her sister.
Frozen tells the story of Anna, who sets off on an epic journey accompanied by the rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven. They set off on an adventure to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Along the way they encounter a hilarious snowman named Olaf. Together they must battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from winter's icy grasp.
The reverse of the coin features the colourized image of Anna wearing her winter outfit and braided hair. Her expression is friendly and welcoming, characteristic of her optimistic world view. The background is shaded with hues of silver, blue and purple to resemble an aurora(or northern lights) effect. On the bottom third, which is left in a normal proof finish, of the reverse design the “Disney FROZEN” logo is engraved. At the very bottom, along the rim, appear the words “1 oz 999 Fine Silver ©Disney”. The two areas are neatly separated by an ornate border, resembling ice crystals.
The obverse is a design shared with the entire series. The obverse is left untreated in a normal proof finish. The right facing and crowned Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II appears at the centre of the coin, with the initials “IRB” just below. The obverse legend encircles the Queen's portrait in a clockwise direction and reads : “ELIZABETH II”, “NIUE”, “TWO DOLLARS” and “2016”.
The 40mm(1.57 inch) coin is struck from 1oz of pure .999 Fineness silver and carries a mintage of 10 000 coins. The coin is denominated as $2(two Dollars) and is released in the now standard New Zealand Mint book style display case. The case is styled to resemble a story book and printed to match the snowy theme of the series. Inside are concise character and coin descriptions along with a printed and numbered certificate of authenticity. The coin can be ordered directly from the New Zealand Mint's website for US$80.00 each, or from a reputable international coin dealer.
The next coin in the series should arrive to the end of July 2016 and is expected to feature the adorable snowman Olaf.
