The final coin in Disney Princess collection by the New Zealand Mint has now been released and the auspicious honour of bringing the popular series to a close has fallen to Pocahontas.

Pocahontas is the 11th and final release for the Disney Princess Collection, which has in past included Cinderella, Merinda, Snow White, Mulan and other popular princesses from Disney. Pocahontas was Disney's 33rd animated film and saw release in 1995. Pocahontas is the beautiful daughter of Chief Powhatan, a playful, free-spirited young woman who knows every tree, waterfall and wild creature in her forest home. She seeks the right path for her life with determination and boldness, and her keen intelligence and strong spirit touches and changes the charming Captain John Smith and all who know her.

2016 Disney Princess Pocahontas 1oz Silver Coin Reverse

The first coin in this release is a 1oz silver coin struck from .999 Fineness silver. The reverse depicts the fearless young Pocahontas, to the right of the coin, with her hair waving in the wind while she looks proudly into the distance. Above and to the right autumn leaves are falling all around her. The image of Pocahontas has been colourized, in keeping with her appearance in the film, along with her name that appears to the right. The words “© Disney  1oz 999 Fine Silver” appear at the bottom.

All of the other requisite information such as denomination and date have been reserved for the obverse of the coin. “ELIZABETH II”, “NIUE”, “TWO DOLLARS” and “2016” appear around the obverse rim with the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II at the centre.

The 1oz silver Pocahontas coin measures 40mm and has a limited mintage of 10 000 coins. The coin is released encapsulated within the innovative book-style display case that the New Zealand Mint has been using for selective releases of late. A brief character and product description appears printed on the inside of the case. The coin is listed at US$80.00 at release.

2016 Disney Princess Pocahontas 1/4oz Gold Coin Reverse

The other coin that forms a part of this release is the Pocahontas 1/4oz gold coin. This is in keeping with the norm for the Disney Princess Coin Collection to release a silver 1oz coin and then a gold 1/4oz coin. The gold 1/4oz coin has the same obverse and reverse design as the silver coin with the only difference being that the gold coin is left untreated.

The smaller gold Pocahontas coin is made from pure .9999 Fineness gold and measures in at 22mm. Where the Silver 1oz coin is denominated at $2 the gold sibling is released as a $25 legal tender coin. The Pocahontas gold coin has a limited mintage of 1000 coins and is released in a wood-like display case. At the time of release the 1/4oz Pocahontas gold coin is listed for US$600.00 by the New Zealand Mint. Both coins are issued as legal tender collectors coins by the New Zealand Mind under the authority of Niue.

This might be the last coin release in the Disney princess series, but the New Zealand Mint has already begun to release a series of Frozen themed coins. Given the popularity of these series we at WNN suspect that we haven't seen the last of the Disney themed licensed coins for some time still, and only time will tell what coin collectors and Disney fans alike have to look forward to.
