Following on the success of the Disney Princess collection, the New Zealand Mint is releasing another series of licensed Disney themed coins. This time the series will be dedicated to the 2013 smash hit Frozen.
The “Frozen – Magic of the Northern Lights Collection” will be a five coin series featuring the main characters from the animated film that managed to capture the imaginations of millions across the world.
Frozen tells the story of Anna, who sets off on an epic journey accompanied by the rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven. They set off on an adventure to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Along the way they encounter a hilarious snowman named Olaf. Together they must battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from winter's icy grasp.
The five coins in the series will be released at a pace of one a month starting on the 24th of May 2016. The first coin to be released in the series is dedicated to Elsa – The Ice Queen.
The obverse deign is shared amongst all of the coins with the standard right facing Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The coins are issued for Niue with a legal tender face value of $2. The 40mm .999 Fineness silver coin has a limited mintage of 10 000 coins.
The reverse design has the Disney Frozen logo sculpted at the bottom with the words “1 oz 999 Fine Silver ©Disney” appearing below that, just above the rim. Just above the title an ornate border appears. The coin is colourized above that with the image of Elsa appearing poised and graceful, demonstrating her icy abilities with one raised hand. Two larger ice crystals are left uncoloured exposing the icy cold silver 'ice crystals' to dramatic effect. The background is colourfully treated with varying shades of blue and purple to resemble an aurora effect.
The 1oz silver coin is presented encapsulated in a special printed display case, that resembles a storybook. The certificate of authenticity is printed on the inside along with short product and character descriptions.
The coins are set to retail for US$80.00 each. The next coin in the series will be the Anna coin. We will bring you more details on each coin closer to their actual release dates, right here on World Numismatic News.
