Whether you are a fan of the series or not, no-one can deny that Star Trek is one of the most influential and beloved series of all time. The show, the character and the technology have become so iconic that whether you watch it or not, you will almost without doubt be aware of it.

In order to properly celebrate this the Royal Canadian Mint is issuing a series of coins on the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series.

Canada 2016 Star Trek Silver $10 Coin Set - The Characters and the Technology

Included in this release is a set of four 1/2oz pure silver collectors $10 coins celebrating the characters and technology that play such a big part in the show's popularity.

All four of the 34mm silver coins in the series have a shared obverse design, that being the Susanna Blunt effigy of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. The proof coins will have a staggered release over the next several months with each coin being issued in it's own uniquely designed display case. A total mintage of 12 500 of each coin will be released.

Canada 2016 Star Trek Silver $10 Coin - Kirk and Enterprise

The first coin in the series is the James T Kirk coin featuring the U.S.S. Enterprise herself. The reverse design features a side by side depiction of the beloved Star Trek captain and the ship that is forever associated with him. On the left side is the coloured image of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in a gold coloured uniform as he commands the crew from his chair on the bridge. To his right, the Enterprise is painstakingly recreated in extraordinary detail, thanks to intricate engraving along its saucer shaped hull and twin warp nacelles. The outline of Star fleet’s Delta Shield Insignia is engraved in the background.

Canada 2016 Star Trek Silver $10 Coin - Scotty andCommunicator

The second coin to be released for this set is the Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, or simply Scotty for short, coin and  features the Star Fleet communicator. On the left of the coin Scotty can be seen wearing his red uniform holing the communicator, no doubt awaiting Captain Kirk's now iconic command of “Beam me up Scotty”. To the right an engraved depiction of the communicator is prominently featured. The Scotty coin is set for release on July 5th 2016.

The third coin in the series will be the Communications Officer Nyota Uhura coin that highlights the tricorder. The Tricorder is a scientific sensor device used for scanning items or environments for the purpose of data collection and analysis. The design depicts the image of Uhura(Nichelle Nichols)
 holding a tricorder, most likely as a member of a landing party. To her right in an engraved depiction of the famous device clearly displaying it's the screen on the rotating hood, the control buttons and compartments, and the shoulder strap that allows it to be carried during away missions. The Uhura coin is scheduled for release on August 2nd 2016

Canada 2016 Star Trek Silver $10 Coin - Spock and Phaser

The last coin in the series is dedicated to Lieutenant Commander Spock and the phaser. The phaser was the primary weapon issued to Star Fleet personnel. The coin bears a portrait of Mr Spock
(Leonard Nimoy) wearing a blue Starfleet uniform, he is in a state of alert, as he
points his phaser toward an unseen threat. To the right, an engraved depiction of the futuristic
weapon in profile, as seen in Star Trek The Original Series. The Star Fleet Delta shield again acts as the backdrop. This coin is scheduled for release on the 6th of September and will conclude the set of four.
