The New Zealand Mint has just made available the first coin in a new series entitled the Great Migrations Coin Collection.

The first coin in this new series is the Zebra 1oz silver coin. The series of coins in the collection will celebrate one of nature’s most impressive wonders. The annual events when millions of animals start their great migrations, covering vast distances in search of food, mating partners or shelter.

The impressive reverse design depicts a zeal of Zebras on their annual migration through Africa's Serengeti wilderness. The juxtaposition of just a few select coloured zebras against the larger herd makes for stunning visual. The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The coin is presented in a uniquely printed display box that evokes the image of a large zeal of zebras on the move.

The 40mm 1oz Silver coin is struck from .999 Fine silver and has a face value of $2. A Maximum mintage of 3000 coins will be struck.

The great Serengeti migration is the annual movement of vast numbers of animals including zebra and wildebeest. The animals migrate every year as the seasons begin to shift in search of more fertile pastures and water.
Each year around 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra start their long, journey from Tanzania's Serengeti Plains to Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve. This difficult journey, that covers a distance of around 2,900 km (1800 miles), brings with it severe dangers, and many animals are lost along the way.
The coins can currently be obtained from the New Zealand Mints website and were listed, at the time of writing, for US$80.00 each.
